Upon its release, the Pike promptly reset performance expectations for an all-around/trail fork. Its blend of weight savings, responsiveness, and plush travel brought new levels of comfort and control to the mid-travel category. Riders looking for a mid-long travel fork with a similar set of characteristics (most noticeably the reduced weight), were forced into a holding pattern. Now, permission to land, or to take off rather, has been granted, thanks to the "step-up" Rock Shox Lyrik RCT3 27.5" Solo Air Fork 2016.

Rather than redesigning a new platform, Rock Shox simply tweaked the already-capable Pike to bring its feature set in line with the demands of bike park and big mountain enduro riding. Similar features include the stellar Charger damper with Rapid Recovery rebound, a 15 millimeter Maxle Ultimate through-axle, crown and tapered steerer tube, and 35 millimeter Fast Black stanchions. But, even though the uppers share the same external diameter, the Lyrik's are thicker. That, along with beefed-up lower sliders, add the extra stiffness necessary for the faster speeds and bigger hits the Lyrik is intended to tackle. Further increasing stiffness are the Torque Cap compatible dropouts, which, when paired with Rock Shox's Torque Cap end caps, increase the contact area between hub and fork for better steering control.

Internally, the Lyrik's intended use brought about key refinements to the Pike's example. First, this fork is built for high speeds on technical terrain, a combination that calls for higher air spring pressures to resist constantly blowing through the travel. In order to keep small bump compliance at Pike-like levels, a larger negative air spring was installed. This longer negative air spring chamber needs some extra space, which is seen on the left side of the asymmetric lowers, extending below the dropout. This saves a bit of weight compared to extending both lowers. Second, since higher air spring pressure brings inherently faster rebound, the Lyrik has internally-adjustable rebound adjustment. Just like the Boxxer, riders can alter the shims at the bottom of the damper to fine tune rebound adjustment range.

The Rock Shox Lyrik is for riders who need more travel and stiffness than the Pike, but don't want to suffer the loss of maneuverability and weight savings that running a Boxxer would require. Step up your fork, and step up your game.
